The Loggerhead Sea Turtle --- Caretta Caretta --- a protected species in Zakynthos

The endangered species of Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta) is found in the waters of the Ionian Sea, in particular around the sheltered bays of Zakynthos. Named for their huge heads and powerful jaws, loggerhead turtles are the largest hard-shelled sea turtles alive today. Adults grow to an average weight of one hundred kilos, and can reach more than a metre in length. The beaches of Zakynthos, especially in Laganas bay area and Vassilikos area, have the highest concentration of turtle nesting sites in the Mediterranean. It is of paramount importance that these nesting grounds are protected to ensure the survival of this species of sea turtle in the Ionian Sea. A series of measures have been adopted in order to protect the Caretta-Caretta and in 1999 a National Marine Park (NMPZ) was established, the first marine park in Greece. The nesting beaches of the Caretta Caretta are patrolled to limit any damage to the turtle nests. The Society for the Turtle Protection in association with the Greek Ministry of Environment work endlessly to try to protect the Loggerhead Sea Turtle.
